PROGRAMS

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear." Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa

Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home & Family Services strives to provide a compassionate and nurturing environment for children and youth between the ages of 8 – 18. With a dedicated staff of trained family teachers and professional counselors, we strive to fulfill our mission to share Christ’s healing love with children, youth and families in crisis.

Program Description

Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home & Family Services accomplishes its mission through several programmatic ministries. These include long-term residential care for youth ages 8 to 18; an emergency shelter program for both boys and girls; a transitions program for boys and girls re-entering the community from youth detention; respite care to give parents a short break from caring for children with emotional or physical problems.

Vera Lloyd uses a teaching family model of childcare as the heart of the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home program. Youth are referred to Vera Lloyd through The Department of Health & Human Services, courts, emergency shelters and by private professionals. Youth are frequently victims of physical or sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment.

Eight boys or girls live with a couple, called family teachers, in one of five single-family homes on the Vera Lloyd campus in Monticello. Within a nurturing, structured, family-style environment, youth learn to modify their behavior in order to function well in the family, community and school. Spiritual development is an integral part of daily life at Vera Lloyd. From family prayer and devotions to weekly church attendance and Bible study, young people are guided toward a life of faith. Vera Lloyd’s on-campus school has proven success in helping youth who are struggling academically to reach their appropriate grade level and/or to earn a GED.
